This is how to treat frizzy hair

According to Lorraine Massey, the creator of the Curly Girl Method and author of the book ‘Curly Girl: The Handbook’, frizzy hair is “a curl waiting to happen”. This is a very positive approach to a major and common frustration for many women – especially the curly buns. But what exactly is frizzy hair? How does it occur and how do you control frizz in a way that fits within the Curly Girl Method? We explain it to you!

What is frizzy hair?

That messy cloud of hair that occasionally appears on your head? That is frizzy hair.

The cause of frizzy hair is almost always dry hair. Think of your frizzy hair as a cry for attention, your hair is literally making its way upstairs – to moisture!

Causes and tips for frizzy hair

Curls often do what they want and therefore often don’t define themselves the way you want them to. This can be for various reasons, such as incorrect hair care, too much silicone in your hair, high humidity, damaged ends, or brushing your hair when it is dry.

Did you know that the high humidity in the summer makes it more likely for you to experience frizzy hair?

Read all about it in our blog about sunny summer days and your curls.

We’ll take a closer look at how to prevent and deal with frizz:

Shower and wash

  • Washing your hair too often will wash away the natural oils on your scalp.
So it is better to wash your hair less often, so those natural oils get a chance to replenish and moisturize your hair.
    Result: less frizz!
  • Your hair will thank you if you shower with lukewarm water under a moderate jet.
A hot shower with a hard spray can be wonderful, but it can also be harmful to your hair: it can cause you to wash away the natural oils on your scalp that provide hydration.
In this way, a shower does damage in the same way as a straightening or curling iron, for example: it dries out your hair.
  • Always rinse your hair with cold water after shampooing. This is very cold indeed, but this closes the hair cuticles and makes your hair smooth. So it’s worth it!
  • A regular towel is too rough for your hair and can therefore also be a cause of frizz. So rather use a microfiber towel or a T-shirt. These absorb the moisture well, so you don’t have to rub your hair as hard.
  • Another technique for drying your hair without damaging it is plopping. You tie your hair in a microfiber towel or a T-shirt on top of your head. Plopping creates less frizz , but also more definition, and it helps your hair dry faster.

Maintenance

  • Be careful when using products. People who suffer from stubborn frizz should look out for humectants in dry or very humid weather, which are the following ingredients: glycerine, sorbitol, panthenol, honey, hyaluronic acid and sometimes aloe vera.
  • Avoid shampoo and rather use mild cleansers such as conditioners.
  • Avoid brushing your hair, especially when it is dry. Yet one brush is famous among curlies, precisely because it is suitable for curly hair. The Denman Brush promises to easily get your hair out of the tangles without breaking or frizz, giving your hair a nice curl definition and extra volume. And that promise is more than true to the brush for many women: if you enter the two words on YouTube you will find out soon enough. Always use the brush on wet hair and always use a detangling conditioner with slip before brushing.
  • Be careful with silicones. Silicones are ingredients that are added to all kinds of hair products, such as shampoos, care products and styling sprays, to make the hair shine. You get shiny and frizz-free hair, making it seem like silicone products are good for your hair and nourish it. But actually the opposite happens. Silicones seal your hair, which means that they cover your hair with some kind of thin layer. Good hair products – which do care for your hair – cannot get through here.
  • Have a look at the LOC Method. This represents the order in which you apply hair products to wet hair, namely: Leave-in conditioner, Oil, Cream. It is a technique to moisturize your hair and ensure that your hair retains that moisture. The results of applying the LOC Method are nicer curls, better curl definition, less frizz, more shine and softness.

To sleep

  • When taking care of your natural curls, it is good to not only think about your hair routine for the day, but also how you get through the night in such a way that your curls are not damaged too much and still look great the next day. Without any frizz arising to the surface. Therefore, consider sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase. Because a cotton pillowcase is quite rough, your hairs will rub against each other or against the pillowcase, creating friction. On a satin or silk pillowcase, your hair will slide along, as it were, instead of rubbing against each other. The result? Less frizz!
  • Go to sleep with a pineapple on your head. This is a great way to protect your curls while sleeping. Your hair cannot go in many directions and therefore does not get a chance to frizz. Flip your hair over, grab it together for a loose bun or tail and secure it on top of your head with an Invisibobble or another brand. Your head with a bunch of curls on top resembles a pineapple, hence the name!

Haircut

  • Layers, layers, layers! We cannot say it often enough. Regular and good haircuts, especially those that create layers, really help to control frizz. The outer layers of your hair are the most exposed to heat, moisture, brushing, combing, and environmental damage. Keeping those outer layers healthy will reduce your frizz! And have your hair cut by a hairdresser who knows about curls.
  • Another option is a Curlsys haircut. This is a cutting method invented by Brian McLean. The hairdresser cuts bundles of wet hair that are naturally bundled together with special scissors. Due to the special round cutting technique, it fits nicely with the curl / stroke direction. Your hair will be less heavy, fuller at the scalp and your ends will curl instead of frizz.

Finally

If you are just starting out with the Curly Girl Method and have used heat tools on your hair for years, I bet you have used these tools many times on the outer layer of your hair, also called your HALO.

As a result, that layer is often the most damaged. So don’t give up quickly. If you can already see some beautiful curls underneath that frizz ball, that’s a taste of your real hair potential, once everything is healthy again.

Have patience, apply these tips and you’ll get there!
