The founder of Shea Moisture
The history of Shea Moisture goes back over 100 years. In 1912, Sofi Tucker from Sierra Leone discovered shea butter from the nuts of the shea butter tree. Since then, she has been selling shea butter, African black soap, and homemade skin and hair care products like shampoo and conditioner in rural Sierra Leone.
Sofi Tucker was 19 when she started selling this fair trade nourishing butter as homemade skin and hair products, and the Shea Moisture brand was born.
Three guesses as to what has been the key ingredient in Shea Moisture Curl products for generations ? Exactly! Shea butter !
The company believes in fair trade and treats its suppliers fairly.
What is Shea Moisture?
The Shea Moisture brand ensures that your hair becomes and stays healthy through their hair care products.
The brand has over 150 different products and multiple product lines. Plenty of choice!
As mentioned before, the main ingredient in these hair products is shea butter. This means that Shea Moisture’s fair-trade products are not suitable for every hair type.
This ingredient makes the hair quite heavy, making it mainly suitable for people with frizzy hair.
Shea Moisture’s ingredients are sourced from all over the world. This is because the brand is committed to supporting the local economy and ensuring fair production processes.
This is how the Shea butter is made in Ghana, where women make it by hand, using a fair production process.
All products are also free from silicones, sulphates and harmful mineral oils .
Other many benefits of Shea Moisture include that the brand does not test on animals and that the brand does its best to remain as affordable as possible.
So everyone can enjoy Shea Moisture products!

The ingredients of Shea Moisture
As mentioned above, the main ingredient of the brand’s products is Shea butter.
This raw Shea butter has a creamy yellow-white substance and is very popular not only with Shea Moisture, but also with other (cosmetic) brands.
This is because the ingredient deeply nourishes both hair and scalp without causing irritation, making the product suitable for people with sensitive scalps. It has been specially developed.
Another ingredient often found in Shea Moisture products is Jamaican black castor oil and Coconut Hibiscus.
This Jamaican black castor oil contains the fatty acid ricin, an ingredient that helps keep hair healthy and strong.
In addition, roasting the castor beans releases ash. This ash provides extra protection and nourishment for hair!
These are not the only two ingredients you can find in, for example, a leave-in conditioner, restore shampoo, hibiscus curl or shampoo conditioner from Shea Moisture.
The leave-in conditioner and, for example, the Shine conditioner softens, detangles, protects and nourishes the hair.
In addition to Shea butter and Jamaican black castor oil, the brand’s products also often contain coconut oil.
The products range from moisturizing creams, soothing shampoos to an organic Shea Butter.
These three ingredients nourish the hair immensely, making them perfect for dry, curly hair ! This doesn’t necessarily mean all the products are curly-proof, but the Shea Moisture products you buy from us certainly are! The leave-in conditioner and Shea Moisture Manuka Honey, for example, are good choices.
It is good to know that the products do not contain parabens, sulphates, petroleum, phthalates and formaldehyde.

My hair has been falling out with the curl products I’m using. I’ve been told to avoid products with coconut and/or castor oil. Can you recommend products that meet this guideline?
Thanks!
