What is pre-poo?

First things first. Pre-poo stands for pre (sham)poo, so before shampoo.

It is a method of applying a treatment to the hair before shampooing, that should be left on the hair for a period of time to work it’s magic.

Some people choose to pre-poo with an oil, others prefer a deep conditioner.

This may sound a bit crazy, but it’s actually very good for your hair. Because after cleansing with a shampoo, hair can often feel a little too clean.

By using a pre-poo, your cuticles will already have some kind of barrier and so will prevent hair from feeling stripped of natural oils.

In addition, pre-pooing will help to moisturise your hair. The result after a pre-poo treatment will be soft, shiny curls without frizz!

The benefits of a pre-poo for curly hair

So the pre-poo method probably is a different routine than you are used to.

But there are many advantages to pre-pooing:

  • Less frizz
  • Shiny hair
  • Less dry hair
  • A healthier scalp
  • Hair growth
  • Makes it easier to detangle hair
  • Less hair loss

What can you use as a pre-poo?

For a pre-poo treatment you can use an oil, deep conditioner or thick cream. Oils that are suitable for this are, for example, coconut oil, sunflower oil, argan oil, olive oil and avocado oil. You can use one oil, or make a mix of various types of oils yourself.

So a pre-poo treatment is done before shampooing. This can be half an hour in advance, but also the night before.

It just depends on how long you want it to sit and how dry or damaged your curls are.

Apply a generous amount of oil or deep conditioner to dry hair. A pre-poo must be applied meticulously so that the entire head is covered.

Dividing the hair in sections ensures that the product is distributed evenly.

After you have applied the product, detangle your hair as much as possible with your fingers. Also massage your scalp, using circular movements with your fingertips.

Leave the pre-poo product on your hair for at least 30 minutes before shampooing.

The longer you pre-poo, the better. Cover your hair with a shower cap, as the heat ensures that the pre-poo can do his job extra well.

Prefer an overnight pre-poo? This involves applying the product on your hair at night, wrapping your hair with a scarf, and washing in the morning.

After half an hour, or the next morning, rinse out the oil or deep co and wash your hair with a CG shampoo.

Pre-poo treatments can create oily hair or a greasy hair feeling, so be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly to avoid product residue.

In most cases, a single shampoo application won’t remove all of the product, so you probably want to wash it a second time.

After this you can style your curls as you normally do.

If you apply a pre-poo once a week, your curls will feel a lot healthier in no time!

Pre-pooing ensures that your hair retains more moisture and is not stripped of the oils your curls need so badly.
