CURLY GIRL APPROVED CO-WASH
One of the most important steps in the Curly Girl Method is to stop washing your curls with shampoos that contain sulfates. As a Curly Girl, it is better to wash your hair with a co-wash: short for conditioner washing, gentler on your hair and scalp.
CO-WASH: THE PERFECT MID-WAY BETWEEN CONDITIONER AND SHAMPOO
You can use a conditioner for co-washing, but special co-wash conditioners are also available. These contain more cleansing ingredients than a normal conditioner, but less than a shampoo. So your hair dries out less than if you would use a shampoo with sulfates. As with the rest of your hair products, use a co-wash that is free from silicones, parabens, and sulfates. Curious which co-wash conditioners are Curl Girl-proof? In our list you will find our recommendations. These will help define, moisturize, soften and frizz-free your curls. What else do you want?
Do you suffer from build-up and want to clean more deeply, try a clarifying shampoo without sulfates.
The reason the Curly Girl Method recommends a co-wash instead of shampoo is that shampoo is often harmful to your hair. It contains harsh cleaners – such as sulfates – that do their job a little too well. As a result, they also wash away the natural oils from your hair and can therefore affect the structure of your hair. This can cause irritated and dry scalp, frizzy hair, or hair that quickly becomes greasy. Many Curly Girls co-wash with a CG-proof conditioner, others use a real co-wash for this. This contains more cleansing ingredients than a normal conditioner. You use them the same way: just like you would use a shampoo. They just don’t foam! The above list consists of co-washes that are CG-friendly, and therefore do not contain silicones, parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, wax and drying alcohol.
