Co-wash

Co-Wash: The perfect middle ground between conditioner and shampoo
One of the most important steps in the Curly Girl Method is to stop washing your curls with shampoos that contain sulfates. As a Curly Girl, it’s better to wash your hair with a conditioner, CG shampoo or co-wash: short for conditioner wash, milder for your hair and scalp.
For co-washing you can use a conditioner, but there are also special co-wash conditioners for sale. These contain more cleansing ingredients than a normal conditioner, but less than a shampoo. So your hair will dry out less than if you were to use a shampoo with sulfates. As with the rest of your hair products, use a co-wash that is free of silicones, parabens and sulfates. Wondering which co-wash conditioners are Curl Girl-proof? In our list, you’ll find our recommended ones. These will help define your curls, moisturize, soften, and be frizz-free. What more could you want?
If you have a lot of build-up and want to cleanse deeper try a clarifying shampoo without sulfates.
The reason the Curly Girl Method recommends a co-wash instead of shampoo is that shampoo is often harmful to your hair. It contains harsh cleaners – like sulfates – that do their job a little too well. As a result, they also wash away your hair’s natural oils, which can affect the structure of your hair. This can leave you with an irritated and dry scalp, frizzy hair, or hair that gets greasy easily, among other things. Many Curly Girls co-wash with a CG-proof conditioner, others use a real co-wash for this. These contain a bit more cleansing ingredients than a normal conditioner. You do use them the same: exactly as you would use a shampoo. They just do not lather! The above list consists of co-washes that are CG-friendly, and thus do not contain silicones, parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, waxes and drying alcohol.
