Care tips for fine curly hair
With fine curly hair, care is the most important thing. Because the better the condition of your hair, the more resilient the curls will be. Use hair products that actually care for your hair, instead of products with silicones that only make it look good on the outside. In the short term you’ll get shiny and frizz-free hair, which makes it seem like products with silicone are good for your hair. But actually the opposite happens. They seal your hair, which means they cover your hair with a thin layer. Good hair products – which do care for your hair – cannot get through here. Also be careful with sulfates, because they dry out your hair.
Treat your hair with care
Since fine curly hair is very fragile, it’s best to handle it with care. Therefore, never brush your hair when it is dry, because then your hair is more fragile. Rather, do this when your hair is wet and you’ve applied conditioner. You’ll see that your hair is a lot softer and you can brush through it smoothly. But don’t use too much conditioner, otherwise your hair will lie flat and greasy.
Also be careful with rough materials, such as a wool scarf or towel. Your hair rubs against this and that’s not good for your fine hair strands. Rather use a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to dry your hair. Also, it’s better to sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, because your hair will slide along on it, instead of rubbing against each other. This way you’ll get less frizzy hair, tangles, and split ends. It also doesn’t strip your curls of moisture.
Don't use too many hair products
Although fine curly hair needs a lot of care, too much isn’t good either. Therefore, don’t use too many hair products as it can weigh down your hair. Only use products that are necessary to maintain the bounce of your curls. Preferably also choose light hair products and light oils. In general, the lighter the curl and the finer the hair, the lighter the hair product may be. Consider, for example, a light leave-in conditioner, mousse, avocado oil and jojoba oil. Gel, creams and butters are usually too heavy for fine curly hair.
Use hair products with protein
Your fine curly hair requires a strong foundation so that it can retain moisture better. You can ensure this by incorporating more protein in your hair care routine. Protein temporarily seals in pores in the hair shaft, allowing it to temporarily hold in hydration. But don’t use too much protein, as this can make your hair drier and more brittle. If you find that a high-protein product is too rough on your hair, replace it with a product whose protein ingredients are further down the list.
Choose the right hairstyle
The right hairdresser and the right way of cutting are also important. Fine curly hair usually is flatter than thicke curly hair, so it takes more effort to create volume. If you would like more volume, ask your hairdresser to cut layers in your hair. This makes it fall less flat than if it’s cut to one length. Long hair is not recommended, because it can pull out the curls and make your hair look even finer.
