The road to healthy curly hair can be a bumpy road. Online you will find millions of advice on how to best treat your hair. We explain the real must do’s based on the most common mistakes.
In this article:

#1 You comb your hair
Most curls now know that it is not a good idea to brush your hair, because your curls will immediately lose their shape. It’s okay to detangle your hair at least once a month, but promise us that you won’t be brushing your hair every morning.
That’s a shame! So put that brush away and let your hair BE. And if you do it, preferably use a Denman Brush.
This brush is famous among curlies because it is suitable for curly hair. The brush promises to get your hair out of the tangles easily without breaking or creating frizz, giving your hair nice curl definition and extra volume.

#2 You wash your hair too often
Curls are naturally drier than straight hair. The oils your scalp produces, unlike straight hair, take longer to get to the hair strands.
So if you wash your hair too often, including using a shampoo that contains many harsh cleansers, your hair will stay dry. A better way to wash your curls is co-washing, or washing your hair with conditioner.
The advantages of this are: your hair and scalp stay hydrated, less frizz, more shine, better definition and it makes your hair softer, making it less brittle and easier to comb.

#3 You blow dry your hair
You better not blow dry your hair. At least, never without a diffuser.
If you blow-dry your hair without a diffuser, your curls won’t form properly and you’ll end up with a bird’s nest on that pretty head of yours. If you blow dry with a diffuser, it’s better to blow dry cold than hot because the heat is harmful to your hair.

#4 You dry your hair with a towel
When you get out of the shower, roll your hair into a turban from your towel – who didn’t grow up with it? But it is better to stop doing this forever.
The thing is, towels are rough and can damage your hair or create frizz. So rather use a T-shirt or microfiber towel and then let your hair air dry.
#5 you buy hair products blindly
You often reach for products for curly hair. Sounds logical, but these products are not automatically really good for your curls.
It is all about the ingredients! So read the label carefully before putting it in your basket.
For example, many shampoos and conditioners contain sulfates and silicones that cleanse too deeply and thereby wash away the natural greasy layer on your scalp.
Sulphate and silicone free products keep that layer and ensure that your hair stays hydrated and your curls keep its shape.

#6 You don't use a deep conditioner
A deep conditioner is a conditioner that penetrates deeper into the hair and is extra nourishing. You can see it as an extra treatment to restore dry and damaged hair.
The benefits of deep conditioning are more beautiful, healthier and shinier curls that shape better. Curious how it works exactly?

#7 You sleep with wet hair
Your curls can dry strangely if you go to sleep with wet hair on a flat surface (read: pillowcase). In addition, wet hair is very fragile and cannot toss and turn well overnight.
So go to sleep with dry hair that is well protected.
Is it almost impossible to do otherwise, because you always shower in the evening, for example? Then use the plopping method. This is a technique for drying your hair without damaging it.
You tie your hair in a microfiber towel or a t-shirt on top of your head. Plopping creates less frizz, but also more definition, and it helps your hair dry faster.
#8 You don't protect your hair at night
This is critical. Your curls will sag in the morning if you don’t take precautions at night. So sleep with protected hair to prevent a frizzy and flat head.
The pineapple method is very suitable for this. Flip your hair over, grab it together for a loose bun or tail and secure it on top of your head with an Invisibobble or another brand.
Your hair cannot go in many directions and therefore does not get a chance to frizz.

#9 You sleep on a cotton pillowcase
Avoid sleeping on a cotton pillowcase because it is not smooth enough. If you toss around on a rough surface all night, your curls will tangle and frizz.
So rather sleep on a pillowcase made of silk or satin.

#10 You don't like your hair
Perhaps this is the most important of the most common curly hair mistakes. You have beautiful and unique hair and it makes YOU!
Give your curls some love, and they’ll give you back a lot of love and confidence.
