Review: Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer for Curly Hair

Within the Curly Girl Method, the use of a hair dryer is not recommended. Lorraine Massey, the one who invented the CG Method, even calls blow-drying ‘frying’, because you’re literally baking your hair. But, there is a correct way to blow-dry your hair, and that’s with a diffuser. Fortunately, because when it’s freezing outside it’s not a good idea to go out with wet hair. A hair dryer that’s really suitable for this, is the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Many curlies are raving about it, so we were really curious. Of course we had to try it too, so here is our review of the Dyson Supersonic!

Psssst… Are you curious about the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer too? Then make sure to follow us on Instagram, because you can win one there really soon!

What makes the Dyson Supersonic so special?

There are many hair dryers for sale, but the Dyson Supersonic is the most special one. It’s not just any hair dryer.

And not only because it looks so stylish, but also because of its features. For example, the powerful digital V9 motor is incorporated in the handle.

This ensures a better weight distribution, which improves the balance of the hair dryer so your arm won’t get tired.

The hair dryer blows a controlled air flow, which makes your hair dry a lot faster: up to six times faster than other hair dryers!

Does the Dyson hair dryer damage hair?

On the back of the hair dryer, there are three speed settings, four temperature settings, and a coolshot. The coolshot helps you set your hair, so it holds its shape longer.

The intelligent heat controller measures the air temperature 20 times per second and adjusts it if necessary.

This way, you won’t damage your hair with high temperatures, and you don’t have to use extra protective hair products.

The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is supplied with three magnetic attachments. They are ideal for styling and drying the hair.

These are the three attachments:

  • The smooth hair attachment dries your hair slowly, using a gentle, wide air stream.
  • The Styling Concentrator attachment focuses the air flow in a very targeted manner, so that the rest of your hair doesn’t get frizzy.
  • The diffuser is for styling and drying your curls. This is what curlies need!

How does a diffuser work?

It’s best to let your curls air dry, but that’s easier to do in the summer than in the winter.

In temperatures below 50 degrees fahrenheit, it’s not a good idea to outside with wet hair, as this can actually cause hair damage.

So when it’s freezing outside or you don’t have time to wait for your hair to dry, you can use a hair dryer with a diffuser. A diffuser disperses the air to reduce frizz and keep from disrupting the natural wave pattern.

It provides volume and curl definition.

To protect your curls from heat damage, it’s important not to use the hottest setting of your Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. It’s best to use the medium or cool setting.

Flip your head upside down, place a section of your hair in the diffuser and turn the hair dryer on. Don’t move it, but keep it in one place for about two to three minutes.

Then turn it off and remove the diffuser. Don’t turn it back on until you’ve placed another part of your hair in the diffuser. Go through your whole hair this way.

How to use the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer in a CG routine

Wondering how to use the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer in your CG routine? We made you a step-by-step plan:

  • Wash your hair with a co-wash.
  • Style your curls the way you normally do, for example with a mousse or gel.
  • Towel dry your hair with a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel, then plop your hair for about ten minutes.
  • Flip your head upside down and divide your hair into four sections. Take the Dyson Supersonic and place one section of your hair in the diffuser. Turn on the hair dryer and hold it in place for two to three minutes. Do the same for the other three parts. By blow drying your hair upside down you’ll get more volume at the roots.
  • Is your hair almost dry? Let the last part air dry.
  • When your hair is completely dry, gently squeeze out the cast. This also provides some extra volume.

Dyson Supersonic hair dryer curly hair review

Now that you know how the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer works and why it’s so special, you are probably curious about our experiences on curly hair!

Review by Isabelle: is the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer worth it?

I am super excited about the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer! What I especially like is that this hair dryer is really focused on people with curly hair, since the lowest setting of the blower is very low. This will prevent your hair from frizz, because the harder it blows, the more fluff you can create.

I also really like that there are four different temperature settings. I actually always have it on 1 or 2, and 2 is quite hot already. So it’s nice to have so many options. In addition, there is a cold setting, which is nice if you don’t want to use any heat at all. I also like that there are all kinds of attachments, but I only use the diffuser. It’s nice and big, which is also an advantage.

What I also find very beneficial is that it’s a super light hair dryer. I think I spend at least 20-30 minutes diffusing, but my arm doesn’t get tired after a while.

What I always do is dry my hair on a warm setting like 1 or 2. That takes about 15 minutes, because I’m working quite specifically with the diffuser in different places. Then I use the coolshot to set my curls, so it holds its shape longer.

Thanks to the diffuser, I have a lot more bounce in my curls. It also ensures a lot of shrinkage, which is not always an advantage, but if I don’t use a diffuser I have very saggy curls. So I am very happy that’s in the past. You shape your curls and give them much more definition.

The only downside of the Dyson Supersonic I can think of is that it’s quite pricey. But I really think it’s a super nice product. I actually always use it, I never air dry anymore because it takes too long. And with the Dyson, I can be done within half an hour and my hair is completely dry and super shaped with volume. So I’m really, really excited about the Dyson Supersonic and would recommend it to everyone!
