Learn more about CG shampoo
Our range of CG products can be found in the CG shampoo category above. All our products are perfectly compatible with the CG method.
On this page, you’ll find more information about using CG shampoos, which ingredients are good for your hair, and which product is best suited to your hair type.
What is a CG shampoo?
A CG shampoo is a shampoo specifically designed for curlies who follow the Curly Girl method. The shampoo meets all the guidelines of the CG method.
A CG shampoo cleanses the scalp. It’s truly essential in your curly girl routine because a clean scalp lays the foundation for perfect curls.
The core of the CG method is avoiding certain ingredients. Think of ingredients like silicones, sulfates, drying alcohol, wax, and mineral oils.
These are ingredients normally found in hair products. But with the Curly Girl Method, you avoid them.
When following the Curly Girl method, you only use CG shampoos and CG conditioners. Of course, it’s difficult to determine which products contain which ingredients.
That’s why we try to make it as easy as possible for you and have selected the best CG shampoos.
What are the many benefits of a CG shampoo?
- It gently cleanses the hair
- Provides shiny and defined curls
- The CG products are free from silicones, sulphates, mineral oils, wax and drying alcohol.
Can I use a CG shampoo if I haven't started the CG method yet?
Before you start washing your curly hair with a CG shampoo, we recommend that you, as a curly girl, first wash with a final wash shampoo.
A final wash shampoo contains sulphates, which a CG shampoo does not contain.
Why are sulfates bad for your hair?
When you start with the Curly Girl method, you avoid harmful ingredients like sulfates and drying alcohol. However, sulfates are still needed during the final wash.
Sulfate is necessary to ensure your hair is completely clean before starting the Curly Girl method. Furthermore, the final wash shampoo is free of silicones, mineral oils, waxes, and drying alcohols.
Within the CG method, sulphates are avoided because sulphates are extremely drying.
Did you wash your hair with a final wash shampoo? Then you can start the Curly Girl method and start using a CG shampoo and other CG products.
How do I know when to cleanse with a CG shampoo?
Essentially, a CG shampoo strips your hair of everything that’s built up during the CG method. So you start with a clean slate.
There are several ways to cleanse and purify your hair, but it must be done with the right products.
Simply washing with a co-wash won’t work. Or, conversely, washing only with a CG-safe shampoo won’t do much for your curls either. It’s fine, but it probably won’t achieve the results you’re hoping for with the CG method.
So, if you’re looking at your curls after using your stylers and wondering why they don’t shine like they used to, it could very well be that your hair needs a deep cleansing with the right products.
Styling products work best on hair without buildup. The good news is that you can completely control this yourself.
All you need to do is cleanse your hair with the right hydration and conditioning properties. A CG shampoo removes all the buildup so you can show off your hair again.
Did you know that sweat also builds up in your hair? Sweat, natural oils, external oils, pollution, etc., also cause buildup.
That’s why cleansing your hair with CG shampoos is extra important, no matter how well you care for it. Too many external factors can still cause your hair to become polluted.
When do I need a CG shampoo with or without protein?
Proteins are able to provide your hair with a layer that makes your hair softer and then protects it.
Whether or not you need protein for your hair varies depending on your hair type. However, there are some reasonable guidelines.
In general, hair products containing protein can have significant positive effects. They give your hair stronger curls, more shine, and prevent breakage. While that sounds great, it can also have a slightly less positive effect.
While every hair type can benefit from some protein, it’s essential to use CG-proof shampoos with protein for the following hair types:
- fine hair
- brittle or damaged hair
- dry hair
- dyed or bleached hair
Beware: There are some ingredients that work the same as protein but are not actually protein.
We have added a CG notification to each product so you can clearly see what the product actually contains.
This way you can be sure that a product actually contains proteins and does not contain harmful ingredients such as mineral oils, sulphates and drying alcohol.
What kind of CG shampoo should I use if I have wavy hair?
If you use a shampoo that is too heavy for fine or wavy hair, your curls may fall out more quickly and you will lose definition.
That’s why we recommend using light products if you have wavy hair. You can easily select these products using our filter under “Features.”
A light CG shampoo can be recognized because it contains little to no butters and oils.
Light products mainly have to do with how fine your hair is and not with the elasticity and porosity of your hair.
How often should I use a CG shampoo?
First, we want to point out that how often you should wash your hair varies depending on your hair type. You’ll often have a good sense of this yourself.
Above all, do what feels best for your hair. There’s no real set rule.
It’s also important to consider which shampoos you have at home. For example, you can’t wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo every day.
But if you use a regular CG shampoo with a light weight, you can easily use it several times a week.
Always use shampoo when washing your hair, not just conditioner. If you don’t, you may experience itching, dandruff, or other problems.
What should I do if I want to wash my hair more often?
Do you want to wash your hair more often? Or do you enjoy the clean feeling of shampoo as often as possible?
Then we recommend adding a co-wash to your hair routine.
You can use a co-wash and conditioner more often in your routine. You can even use it every day if you like.
Just remember to use shampoo at least once a week to prevent buildup. And make sure to follow up with conditioner and/or hair masks after using a curly girl shampoo.
Is a CG shampoo also suitable for bleached hair?
You can also use the Curly Girl method with blond or bleached hair.
There are special CG silver shampoos that ensure that you don’t get a yellow or orange glow in your hair but are still CG-proof!
A silver shampoo is therefore a must to ensure that your blonde hair does not suffer from a less beautiful glow.
This way, you can also use the CG method with bleached hair without having to wash your hair with shampoos that contain harmful ingredients such as mineral oils and sulphates.
Using hair masks also ensures that your hair stays healthy.
