You’re probably wondering what a final wash entails. What final wash shampoos are there? How often do you do it? How do you actually wash your curls? What is a CG final wash?

What is a final wash shampoo?

Because the vast majority of hair products contain silicone, you may experience build-up : a build-up of hair products on your hair.

Silicones are generally not water-soluble. This seals your hair, preventing it from breathing.

For which hair types can you use a final wash?

Everyone’s hair is different. Some people need more protein, while others need less. But a final wash is suitable for every hair type . We’ll also give you other tips below.

A Final Wash Shampoo removes product buildup, especially silicones, from your hair. This way, you can start the CG method with a clean slate!

This shampoo is for single use only and is not CG-friendly! If you accidentally use a non-CG product, you will need to repeat the Final Wash. Therefore, these shampoos are only suitable as a final wash before starting the CG method.

A final wash does n’t necessarily have to match your hair type. You can simply choose any final wash and start with the CG Method.

In addition, the Final Wash ensures that your hair can absorb more moisture and caring ingredients from your new CG-friendly CG products.

That’s why when you start the CG Method and switch to co-washing, you’ll probably notice that your hair feels worse at first.

How do you use a final wash?

You use a final wash just like you would your ‘regular’ shampoo.

That’s because your hair is going through the transition phase. It’s the transition phase, and it’s caused by years of silicone use on your hair.

A final wash is characterized by its sulfat content, making it such an extremely powerful cleanser that it can strip silicones and mineral oils from your hair. This also applies to certain waxes that are not water-soluble.

The Final Wash Shampoos above are  Curly Girl -proof, and therefore do not contain silicones or parabens, but they do contain sulphates.

Which products do I need?

So, for the Final Wash, you need a CG shampoo without silicones and parabens , but which does contain sulfates . This might sound strange, since the Curly Girl Method aims to avoid sulfates.

But precisely because they work so well—due to the sulfates they contain—they remove silicone buildup from your curls. That’s precisely why they’re ideal before starting your CGM hair routine.

After that, you can start using CG-safe products, meaning sulfate-free. Most private label shampoos for everyday use and for babies are suitable as a Final Wash. But if you accidentally use a non-CG product, you’ll have to start over with a final wash.

Which product should I purchase?

We recommend that you check the label of all Final Wash Shampoos you buy, including those listed above, to ensure that the product contains sulfates but not silicones.

After washing your curls with a Final Wash Shampoo, they may feel dry and damaged, and they probably are. Therefore, nourish and treat your curls with CG-friendly products, such as a deep conditioner and a leave-in conditioner. You can also use a day shampoo.

There are several suitable, inexpensive shampoos for a final wash (so, one-time use!), such as: Shampoo with sulfates (final wash). You can use, for example, Neutral shampoo or Zwitsal shampoo. These are ultimately CG-friendly products. The CG final wash is a perfect start to the curly girl method.

After the final wash, you should only use CG products to condition your hair for best results.
