What is a curl gel?

A gel is essential in your CG product stash. Curly girl method gels will give your curls hold, keeping them in place throughout the day and for days to come. A gel forms a hard-feeling layer around your hair. This hard feeling (also called a cast) is the magic behind curly girl gel. This layer enhances your curl definition and gives you bouncy, shiny curls. Allow this layer to become completely hard and dry. Then, scrunch it out with an oil. The result? Long-lasting curls!

However, experience shows that gels keep your hairstyle firm for longer and that your curls are much less likely to fall out!

Besides providing good hold, curl definition, and less frizz, using gel helps your curls retain moisture better and stay hydrated. There are so many different types of gel, there’s something for every hair type and characteristic. To make it a little easier, we’ve compiled our favorite CGM-safe gels.

The many benefits of Curly Girl Method gels:

  • Provides better curl definition: using a CG gel ensures that your curls become and remain better defined.
  • Gel provides more hold: your curls will hold their shape longer after wash day. It’s important to scrunch out the gel cast.
  • It ensures that moisture is ‘locked in’: By using curly girl gel you ensure that the moisture is better retained or ‘locked in’.
  • Less fluff

How do I choose the right gel for my hair?

To choose the right gel for your curls, it’s important to know your hair characteristics. Think of your curl and hair type , hair characteristics, and the porosity and elasticity of your hair. Once you know this, you can look at the list above and choose from brands like Eco Style, Camille Rose, Curls Goddess, Bounce Curl, Curls, Aunt Jackie’s, and The Mane. Also, be sure to read the reviews of all the gels. Once you’ve found the right gel for your curls, you can start using it. According to the Curly Girl Method, you start with a co-wash , then use a deep conditioner , then apply a leave-in conditioner to wet hair, and finish with the gel. You can do this, for example, with the praying hands technique , and then scrunch. Then plop your hair or let it air dry. If your hair is dry, your curls will probably feel crunchy. This is called a gel cast, which you can “break” to reveal soft, healthy curls. Gently squeeze out the gel cast using the Scrunch Out the Crunch method , and voila! There you have your beautiful curls. This is one of many ways to use gel for your curls; see what works best for you. We’ll explain more below!

Is a curl gel right for me?

Every hair type is different, so the right gel for your hair will vary. It depends on the type of curls you have. Gel can also be used for various purposes, so be sure to check your hair’s potential before researching.

The best gel isn’t the same for everyone; it depends on the type of curls you have. Besides, gel can do different things, so you’ll also need to consider what you want to achieve with it.

Curling gels often have a less strong ‘hold’, so that sufficient moisture can enter the hair.

What ingredients are in a curl gel?

Each product is unique, so each one contains different ingredients. A more detailed explanation of the ingredients is easily accessible on the product page when you select a product.

When looking for a curl gel, it’s crucial to check the following ingredients. Regular gels often contain drying alcohol, mineral oils, synthetic fragrances, and parabens.

These ingredients make the curls very dry and do not provide enough definition and moisture that our curls need.

It’s important that it doesn’t become too hard, like regular gel you can get at any drugstore. It’s also important to check if the gel is flaky. This means it doesn’t leave white flakes in your curls. This can also cause flakes and scalp irritation.

Keep in mind that many good curly hair gels don’t contain sulfates, silicones, or parabens. That’s precisely what makes them curly-girl-friendly!

It always takes some experimenting with products and different methods to find out what works best for your hair.

Flaxseed helps strengthen hair and give it a beautiful shine. It also improves elasticity.

How do I use a CG gel?

There are several ways to style your curls with a curl gel. It’s important to start with a good wash and a final wash. This removes buildup from your hair, or any remaining residue. Second, use a good conditioner for curls or a CG-safe shampoo. Finally, you can use a deep conditioner (hair mask). These products are all available in our webshop. This way, you can immediately create a new hair routine that’s healthy for your curls!

You can use the following methods to apply the gel to your curls:

  • Raking: Apply the gel through your hair with your fingers.
  • Squeeze excess product and water from your hair: Once you’ve finished applying the gel, use a cotton shirt or microfiber towel to squeeze out the excess product and water. Be extremely gentle!
  • Shake: After applying the gel, gently shake your head from side to side.
  • Praying hands: Spread the gel over your hands and place your hands flat against each other with strands of hair between them.
  • Squish to condish: Toss your soaking wet hair (for high porosity) or damp hair (for low porosity) forward with your hands and push it upward. Then, squeeze the hair gel into your hair all at once.
  • Pulsing: This is almost identical to the squish-to-condish method. Only this time, you gently squeeze the gel through your hair several times.
  • Plop your curls.

Furthermore, a regular gel is often difficult to mix with a cream, leave-in, or custard. This often results in a flaky effect due to the mixing of the bad ingredients with the good ones.

What does it mean when we talk about ‘cast’?

CG gels range from light to heavy hold. Whether it’s a light or heavy hold, they always dry relatively quickly. This process is called “cast.” Cast is the hard layer of gel you get when the hair and the gel dry. Want your hair to soften again? You can easily scrunch the gel out with a little oil.
