Agnès went to the curl specialist for the first time: Her experience at L’Equipage
I my previous blog I already shared it: I made an appointment with a curling specialist for the first time! But what does that actually mean, and what is the difference with an ordinary hairdresser? In this article I explain and share my experience with curling specialist Nathalie Reyes at L’Equipage in Amsterdam.

A curly specialist, what is this?
Actually, the name already gives it away; a curl specialist is a hairdresser who specializes in curls.
Since curls are a profession in its own right, it is better to go to a hairdresser who understands your curls, than to someone who prefers to blow dry them straight afterwards.

My experience with a curly specialist
L’Equipage is a beauty salon and hairdresser in one. I had made an appointment with Nathalie Reyes because I had come across her name several times in Facebook groups for curlies.
She has a waiting list of two weeks, but I already had a corona haircut, so I could wait those two weeks too.
Before Nathalie started working on my hair, she asked what I wanted and what I didn’t want. Nice! I indicated that I would like more volume, but also happy with my long hair.
She then suggested keeping it long, but cutting a few strands shorter at the front to make it a bit fuller. A great idea!
Volume, curl and shine
Nathalie said that she developed her own hair product at home during the lockdown, called ViNa. It is a leave in conditioner for curls, without sulfates and parabens.
And also vegan, just the way I like it. The product consists of various oils, but is nonetheless not greasy.
When Nathalie put it in my wet hair, I initially thought “Oh shit!”, But she was right: it didn’t make my hair greasy.
Then my hair was blow-dried with a diffuser. Upside down, for extra volume!
Nathalie explained that it is important to alternate the warm setting with the cold, in order to close the hair cuticles. She also focused on the roots, carefully taking the rest of my hair with her. All in all, it felt like a wonderful head massage!
After my hair was almost dried, I was allowed to come back up and look in the mirror. Wow, what a volume!
And it is still really long at the back. That doesn’t happen often with hairdressers, they usually cut too much.
Tips for curly grooming
Other tips I got from Nathalie for taking care of curls:
- Use a mask weekly for deep care.
- Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, which is much gentler on your hair than a cotton pillowcase.

So I am super satisfied and will definitely go back! For the following days, I hardly had to do anything about my hair, just wet it a little. Ideal! I paid € 45 for washing, cutting and blow drying and it took about an hour.
