Hey Curlies, I’m Shanella, a new content creator for Kurlify. When Kurlify asked me to create content for them, I was immediately excited. It’s not about the follows and likes that come with it. It’s about learning to love my hair by caring for it with love, love for myself, and love for my curls, which are part of me. This need for love stems from my childhood, when I always wore my hair up, hiding it, and therefore hiding myself. I have a white father and a Black mother, and my mother always hid her natural hair by relaxing it. So, there wasn’t really a love for natural hair at home. Learning to love your hair is a long journey for me, and I’d love to take you along on it!

LOVE FOR MY CURLS: Where it all began
The first step toward keeping my hair healthy was going to a curly-haired stylist. The magic of these stylists is phenomenal. My curly-haired stylist has meant so much to me; besides the trims every three months, she also teaches me something new about my hair every time. A regular stylist recognizes when your curls are thinning due to stress, for example, or the use of a lower-quality product or one that doesn’t suit my hair.
MY HAIR PROPERTIES
Time to look at my hair’s properties. I’m using the blogs on the Kurlify website for this. What should I look for when choosing curly girl-friendly products? There are five key factors: porosity, curl type, density, hair thickness, and elasticity. Here are mine:
Hair Type: 3C
Density: Medium
Hair Thickness: Medium
Hair Porosity: Low/Normal Porosity
Elasticity: Low/Normal Elasticity

Since the coronavirus pandemic, I’ve had many protective hairstyles, simply because I find doing my hair for my colleagues, who only see me via Zoom, too much effort. So I don’t have a set routine anymore. If I wash my hair on Wednesday because it’s “really” impossible after two weeks, then so be it. But since I’ve noticed that doing my hair makes me feel much better, I’ve made a resolution to maintain a regular routine.
The day before wash day, I put rice water in my hair. Rice water is packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins, antioxidants, and amino acids. Rice water increases my hair’s elasticity, making it less brittle. I might not have made rice water, and I always try to use a mask for my bleached hair. I wash it out the next day with conditioner and then shampoo. I once read somewhere that conditioner first, then shampoo, is better for my hair, so I’ve been doing it that way ever since.
As soon as I get out of the shower, I apply Creme of Nature curling jelly to my hair, then wrap it in a microfiber towel. Once I’ve finished drying myself, applying moisturizer, and my skincare routine, I take my hair out of the towel. I divide my hair into sections and apply Creme of Nature curl activator to each section, brushing my hair with the Denman brush. Once I’ve completed this arm workout, I wrap my hair in the microfiber towel and get dressed.
After getting dressed, the drying process begins. My porosity is low, which means my hair takes a long time to dry. So, I blow-dry my hair, depending on whether it’s morning or evening, until it’s 80% dry.
My scalp gets quite dry, especially in the winter, so I love using Beauty by Aduse’s herbal growth oil. It’s a wonderful blend of herbs and oils.
During the week, I sometimes wet my hair with a plant sprayer to try and refresh my curls. Often, it’s not necessary because I sleep with a satin pillowcase at night.
