Onze Bouclème Review: wij zijn fan!

Bouclème was founded in 2015 by curl expert and curly girl Michele Scott-Lynch. Its products are specifically designed for curly hair and 100% Curly Girl-approved. It aims to give you healthy, frizz-free curls by using natural (and 100% vegan!) ingredients without sulfates, silicones or parabens. Michelle is a mother of two with curly hair, so it should be obvious what inspired Michele to create this product line specifically for curly hair.

Boucleme: the curly hair brand

Bouclème was founded in 2015 by curl expert and curly girl Michele Scott-Lynch. Their products are designed specifically for curly hair and are 100% curly girl approved. Their goal is to provide healthy, frizz-free curls using natural (and 100% vegan!) ingredients with no sulfates, silicones or parabens. Michelle is the mother of two children with curly hair, so it should be obvious what inspired Michele to create this line of products specifically for curly hair.

"When my 2 beautiful curly girls came into the world, it was important to me to help them love their curls. I needed to be a curl model so they would see the beauty of having a full head of curls. I was determined that they wouldn't wake up every day feeling cursed, like I did for so long."

Sustainable and vegan hair products

Bouclème products do not contain any chemical mess, even the preservative used is certified organic. Fair trade products are used whenever possible and only curls are tested, not animals.

The recyclable packaging is an example of the brand’s sustainable policy, which I am very happy about. Also with the recognizable colors on the product packaging.

And a nice bonus is that for every 300 ml bottle you buy on the Bouclème website, they plant a tree. Since 2015, they have planted over 10,700 trees in partnership with Trees for the Future, I think that’s really cool!

Nourishing ingredients that strengthen hair

Curly hair needs nourishing, moisturizing and penetrating ingredients to hydrate, nourish and strengthen the hair cuticles from within.

Bouclème products are packed with natural, plant-based ingredients and are designed to deliver beautiful, shiny, frizz-free curls. The hair products are suitable for three types of curls: wavy, curly or frizzy.

The entire Bouclème product line smells great. It’s so fresh, light and invigorating.

I’ve never smelled anything like it before, I love it. I think it has to do with citrus, spearmint and magnolia leaf, but I’m not sure because it’s a unique and natural scent.

"I want curly-haired women to embrace their natural curl. Women have been told, for too long, to straighten and flatten their curls. My ultimate ambition is for everyone to celebrate their curls. It's about learning to love your natural, beautiful hair type. Our celebration of curls can be seen on the Bouclème website and we want women to share in their unique journey of being #curlyandproud."
– Michele Scott-Lynch

Boucleme is approved for curly girls

All Bouclème products are suitable for curly girls. Apart from the Intensive Moisturizing Treatment, the entire product line is protein-free, so they are moisturizing ingredients.

Made with a blend of high-quality plant actives, such as coconut oil, blue agave, kukui nut oils and aloe vera, each product in this simple 3-step system helps nourish and smooth hair to keep curls well-defined, healthy and shiny.

Bouclème products do not contain any chemical additives, even the preservative used is certified organic. Fair trade products are used wherever possible and only curls are tested, not animals.

The recyclable packaging is an example of the brand’s sustainable policy, which I am very happy about. Also with the recognisable colours on the product packaging.

And a nice bonus is that for every 300ml bottle you buy on the Bouclème website, a tree is planted. Since 2015, they have planted more than 10,700 trees in collaboration with Trees for the Future, which I think is really great!

Boucleme moisturizing curl cleanser

This is a low sulfate-free poo made with a special blend of natural ingredients to provide a very gentle, no-foam cleansing for fine hair, loose waves and oily scalp.

Key ingredients:

  • Sea salt
  • Mongongo oil
  • Sea buckthorn oil
  • Camellia oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Castor oil

Boucleme curl cleanser

This is a no-poo, or co-wash. The curl cleanser thoroughly cleanses the scalp and hair, without disturbing the natural moisture balance. It also removes the oils that the Curl Moisturizing Cleanser leaves in the hair. It contains no harsh cleansing foams and leaves hair clean, fresh and moisturized. It has a fairly good slip, making it easy to detangle hair.

Key ingredients:

  • Argan oil
  • Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Flaxseed
  • Pomegranate extract
  • Honey

Boucleme curl conditioner

The curl conditioner is rich in Omegas 3, 6 and 9, vitamin E and antioxidants to strengthen the hair, protect it from environmental damage and give it shine. The texture and consistency of this conditioner is very pleasant, not too thick or heavy.

Key ingredients:

  • Virgin coconut oil
  • Argan oil
  • Aloe vera leaf juice

Boucleme intensive moisturizing treatment

This nutrient-rich, deeply nourishing formula is perfect for dry, dehydrated hair in need of moisture, strength and shine.

It claims to improve curl definition, increase elasticity, regenerate hair, reduce breakage, detangle hair cuticles, moisturize and protect. Curlies who find Curl Conditioner inadequate use this one.

It has a much thicker and heavier consistency. If you have dry, damaged hair that needs moisture and your hair responds well to oils, you will love this product.

You only need a small amount and the best results are achieved when you actually work it into the hair and use a thermal cap. This is the only Bouclème product that contains protein with the plant-based keratin, wheat bran.

Key ingredients:

  • Wheat bran extract
  • Camellia oil
  • Marula oil
  • Mafura butter
  • Prickly pear seed oil
  • Sea buckthorn oil

Boucleme curling cream

In contrast to the light and almost weightless texture of the Curl Defining Gel, this curl cream is heavier. This is due to the shea butter ingredient.

It is best to apply the Curl Cream to damp hair for soft, frizz-free, resilient and defined locks. It is very pleasant to use before the Curl Defining Gel.

It can also be applied to dry hair for extra moisture the second or third day after shampooing. For some curly hair, the product is too heavy.

Using too much on low porosity hair will weigh it down and make it feel greasy.

Key ingredients:

  • Virgin coconut oil
  • Coconut fruit extract
  • Kukui oil
  • Shea butter
  • Castor oil

Boucleme curl defining gel

The Curl Defining Gel provides shiny, super soft, frizz-free, super defined and resistant curls without too much shrinkage. The first time I used the gel it was very inexpensive, so I didn’t get a good result.

Nowadays I use a generous amount, which creates a nice gel cast after my hair is dry. I scrunch it gently and then my curls look really nice.

This moisturizing gel softens and defines curls without flaking or becoming sticky – this is every curly person’s dream with fine curls and low porosity! It is also Bouclème’s best-selling product.

It is a soft hold gel, which curls but with a perfectly defined hold and no frizz. And that without weighing the hair down.

Even days after washing and applying this gel, my curls stay well formed and nice and supple.

Key ingredients:

  • Aloe vera leaf juice
  • Argan oil
  • Linseed oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Castor oil
