Apple cider cleanse

We’ll start off with apple cider vinegar, because it’s a kitchen ingredient most people will have. An apple cider cleanse is a mix of water and apple cider vinegar.

It removes build up from your hair, keeping your scalp and hair clean and healthy.

In addition, it nourishes your hair with nutrients, like vitamins B, C and potassium, which helps you get and maintain healthy hair.

You can easily make an apple cider cleanse yourself, by mixing 1/3 part organic apple cider and 2/3 part water.

Wet your hair first, pour the cleanse over your scalp and hair, massage it in and let it soak in for 5 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly, as you don’t want to keep smelling like apple cider vinegar all day long. 😉

After this, you can use a deep conditioner to optimally care for your hair.

Gelatin hair mask

Another kitchen ingredient that’s a great hair care ingredient is gelatin. Yes, we’re talking about the gelatin bags you buy at the supermarket.

They’re a great DIY protein treatment. So do check whether your hair needs protein, otherwise you will get a protein overload after using a gelatin hair mask.

The benefits of using gelatin: it’s easily available, inexpensive, and easy to make and apply.

You can use gelatin on its own or add it to a hair mask you already have at home. To do this, heat 1 cup of water in a pan, and add 6 sheets of unflavoured and non-coloured gelatin.

Do this one by one, stir well and don’t let the water boil. When all the sheets have dissolved, you can use the mask like this or add a spoonful of hair mask you have at home.

Let it cool.

Use the gelatin hair mask as you would use any other deep conditioner. So after you wash your hair, apply the treatment evenly on wet hair.

Comb through the hair with your wide tooth comb if you want to make sure it is evenly coated. Leave the treatment for 45 minutes.

Be careful when rinsing, because the gelatin mask can become very hard. So rinse your hair, wait until it has softened and then gently massage the treatment out of your hair with your fingers.

After this, style your curls as you normally do.

DIY oatmeal hair gel

If you have oats for breakfast every day, this recipe is perfect for you as you probably have the main ingredient in your kitchen! Oatmeal is a popular breakfast for a reason, because it’s very healthy.

And for your hair too! It contains many vitamins that stimulate hair growth, strengthen your hair and nourish the scalp.

To make oatmeal hair gel you will need:

  • 3 tbsp oats
  • 1 tbsp oil, one you have in the kitchen such as olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil
  • 2 cups of water

Boil the water and oats in a pan over medium heat. Stir this well until the mixture thickens and becomes a velvety milk-like substance.

Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for a while. Add the oil and stir well.

Now you need to strain and separate the gel from the oats. Let the gel cool down and use it!

You can use this oatmeal hair gel just like any other gel in your curly hair routine.

Coconut oil for curls

We love coconut oil! You can use it for so many things.

Maybe you have it stored in the kitchen to bake with, or in the bathroom to rub yourself with after a shower. But you can also use it for your curls!

It’s a natural emollient and therefore 100% CG proof. Coconut oil is rich in natural fatty acids and therefore a very nourishing and moisturizing substance.

It ensures smooth and shiny curls, and who wouldn’t want that? You can use it to:

  • Untangle your hair
  • As a deep conditioner
  • Against dandruff
  • Against frizzy hair
  • As a leave-in

Preferably use 100% pure coconut oil, which you often find in the store in a solidified version. Before use, take a small amount of fat from the pot and warm it between your hands until it turns into oil on its own.

You don’t need a lot of coconut oil, a tablespoon is more than enough.

DIY Flaxseed Gel

Flaxseed is a superfood for your curls! It’s full of protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, is rich in vitamin E and minerals such as iron and magnesium.

It’s praised for its moisturizing and nourishing effect, stimulates hair growth and gives your curls more definition. To use flaxseed as a styling product for your curls, you need to make flaxseed gel first.

This is very easy and cheap, and 100% natural and vegan! You can use flaxseed gel as the only styling product in your routine, or combine it with a cream, mousse or other gel.

You can use it as a first step, but also as a last step. The options are endless!
